Know anyone who’s so smart they’re dumb enough to sell their car for gas money?
Then this tidbit is for you…
We’ve all wondered why highly intelligent people are often their own worst enemy, right?
Well, some psychologists (probably too smart for their own good, as well) have done studies in an effort to nail down the methodology of this phenomenon.
Basically, they grouped people according to their tested intelligence level and asked them to solve simple, logic-based questions, like:
“A bat and ball cost a dollar and ten cents. The bat costs a dollar more than the ball. How much does the ball cost?”
My ‘wrong’ answer of 10 cents, seemed a no-brainer.
And, based on the study I read, my wrong answer could lump me in with the ‘smarter-people’.
Uh, I’m one of the smarter people? Now, that’s a scary thought.
Anyway, this study by psychologists from James Madison University and the University of Toronto, had this to say about smart people and their reasoning abilities:
The researchers found that smart people were more likely to blurt out the wrong answer because they actually make more mental mistakes when problem-solving.
…they’re so used to being right and having quick answers that they don’t even realize when they’re blowing it by answering without thinking things through…”
In other words, a clear case of the ‘often wrong, but seldom in doubt’ syndrome that I’ve long ascribed to myself.
This ‘smart people’ quirk is often comical to the rest of us (I’m N-O-T smart)! Yet, not so funny when they’re causing problems at work.
So why do smart people do dumb things?
…And, why are so many of them working for our government?
The researchers came up with 8 possible reasons for why smart people screw up, including:
- Overconfidence: used to being right
- Multitasking: recent studies deride the effectiveness of juggling multiple concurrent tasks
- Plain old everyday arrogance: they won’t accept their limitations
