Time for another installment of Aging News!
Strengthen Social Security Act:
If you’re getting a monthly Social Security payment, you already know the ‘Cost Of Living Adjustment’ (COLA), is supposedly adjusted in line with the previous year’s ‘cost of living’ index.
Not really happening in practice, is it?
What’s happening is this: over the past 13 years, Social Security benefits have lost 31% of their buying power.
That would change if the Strengthen Social Security Act, that’s now before both houses of Congress, passes.
Passage is expected to provide:
- Average monthly social security payment increase of $70
- Close a tax loophole that now lets rich Americans avoid paying social security taxes on most of their earnings
- Implementation of a more realistic future COLA adjustment formula

Law Breaking Senior Citizens Get Lenient Judgments:
If our justice system is based upon the foundation of Equal Justice For All, federal judges seemed to have missed school that week…
New study published in the online edition of Criminal Justice Studies shares data that older people, sentenced in federal district courts, receive more leniency than do younger offenders.
The report also states:
…the research discovered that older women are treated with greater leniency than men. Interestingly, it found that Latinos over the age of 60 were sentenced more harshly, while older blacks received shorter sentences on average…”

Scientists discover an on/off switch for aging cells:
Scientists at the Salk Institute say they’ve discovered the ‘switch’ in cells that may hold the key to healthy aging.
The big news is their discovery shows how to keep our cells reproducing new and healthy cells, throughout our various body organs, even as we age. This could be a big deal when it comes to fighting different afflictions like heart and liver diseases, and cancer, etc.
