Another great day to be alive.
Hope you’re also healthy and having a laugh, or on the least, a chuckle or two.
Lately, I’ve been hearing a lot about the dangers of eating GMO produced food. (GMO: Genetically Modified Organisms)
So, I thought I’d research it and see what all the noise was about. Here’s what I found out…
Basically, Genetically Modified Organisms are:
“…an organism whose genetic material has been altered using genetic engineering techniques. Organisms that have been genetically modified include micro-organisms such as bacteria and yeast, insects, plants, fish, and mammals…” Source
That covers quite a bit of territory, doesn’t it?
The most common suspect GMO foods are:
- Corn, both field corn and the sweet corn we eat
- Canola oil (I cringe every time see this nasty oil on another list of toxins)
- Sugar beets (yet another reason to stay away from refined sugar)
Having listed these foods, we’re likely to only see sweet corn, summer squash and some papayas, snuggling up with others of their kind, in our local grocery’s bins.
Along with those foods, you have to consider the foods being sold that are coming from animals fed on genetically altered crops.
These include: beef, pork, poultry, poultry products, like eggs and farm raised fish. You can get a further rundown on this, when you Table meat fed on GMO
If you wanna eliminate GMO foods from you diet, look for food labels with the Non GMO Project Verified seal.
Beware of company labels saying Non GMO.
Some companies lie and use this ruse as a marketing gambit to move more product. They can get away with it because of the lack of oversight.
The big question, as yet unanswered, is GMO foods making us sick?
A few, would-be, and mostly self-acclaimed, health gurus are having a field day promoting that they are harmful.
Maybe genetically modified foods have the potential to hurt us…
Yet, I couldn’t find any credible evidence supporting this theory.
And I really searched.
It may turn out I’m wrong, but it looks like the ‘GMO scare’ will turn out as another one of those name it and claim it kinda deals we so often see on the fringes of health.
In the long run, GMO foods may prove toxic.
No proof yet, though:
“Processed foods like sugar or vegetable oil may carry ingredients from GM crops, but the modified features of the crop are not present in the food and do not change the safety or nutritional values of the food…” Source
In the spirit of transparency, I went into this project expecting to find multiple horror stories about the negative effects from eating the spawn of genetically modified food.
I’m happy to have learned otherwise…
Let me end this by saying “I don’t know anything for certain and I’ve no advice about anything. My role is reporting upon my research and sharing personal stories with you.
Still, I hope to inspire you in some small way.
Ideas for me, your aging related story, or comments are always very welcome.
