It’s a beautiful day here in sunny Panama City, Florida.
Perfect sleeping weather with the temperatures dropping into the 60’s at night.
And, perfect ‘being outside’ doing stuff, weather with sunny daylight temperatures in the late 70’s and early 80’s.
Almost makes a man feel like he’d like to live forever…
On the other hand, if you do it right, living past 105, or so, would be beside the point of it all.
Anyway, it’s time for another edition of our weekly favorite Aging News.
And, we’ll begin with…
Senior Citizens Dig Their Sex Lives:
Having turned 70 last month, I wasn’t surprised by the sexual revelations revealed in a new study from Sweden’s Sahlgrenska Academy:
Seniors’ sexual activity has increased not just in frequency, but in quality as well, for 62 per cent of women and 71 per cent of men reported being highly satisfied with their sex lives…”
One thing from the study I wasn’t prepared for, was the findings that women’s sexual desires, generally speaking, aren’t likely to keep up with us men.
That stinks IMHO, and suspect it’s somehow related to societal roles and unwritten behavioral models.
Then again, it could be biological.
But, I don’t know, because around here, the libidos seem pretty evenly matched.
All in all, the results of the sexual study is an interesting read. Plus, the article I found written about the study, is short, to the point, and equally satisfying…

Does Having Goals & Life Purpose Protect Our Brain:
It doesn’t take a research scientist to figure out that if you don’t have a reason to get outta bed, you’re not going to live as long as someone who does.
But, never mind commonsense…
Scientist recently published a study where they measured the effects of having a ‘life purpose’ has on older people.
Here’s one thing the researchers said:
Previous research has shown that purpose in life, the belief that one’s life is meaningful and goal-directed, is associated with greater engagement in self-reported physical activity…”
…having a sense of meaning and possessing a sense of self-realization constitute the 2 key components of positive mental health or psychological well-being.
They propose that these 2 factors, along with other aspects of well-being (e.g., positive relations with others), provide the necessary mental resources for optimal functioning in various physiological systems, which “in turn modulate immune factors and neuroendocrine response to challenge…”

Older People Are In Danger Of Chronic Subdural Hemorrhages:
According to new research from the NYU Langone Medical Center, chronic subdural hemorrhage (SDH) will become the most common adult brain condition requiring neurosurgical intervention in the U.S.
SDH, brain surface bleeding, is usually caused by getting our head plonked.
It can also be caused by the blood thinner medications so many of kids on the Far Side Of 55 take. Heavy drinkers are also at greater risk than the general public.
And, because aging causes thinning brain tissue and membranes, elderly people are more likely to develop SDH.
This is a serious health problem, and you can read more about it when you click on the following blue link: Danger Of Chronic Subdural Hemorrhages
Signs Of Dementia Or Just Old Age?
We all have times when we can’t remember, well, I can’t seem to remember what I was gonna say…
Anyway, dementia is a scary condition that I don’t want any part of.
Researchers at the Mayo Clinic recently announced a ranking tool medical professionals can use to score how at risk someone is to get dementia.
The thinking is, according to researchers, earlier intervention and treatment, could slow the onset of dementia. And, there’s hope it could be prevented, if caught early enough.
This is good news indeed…

Old Guys Acting Really, Really Weird:
I ran across this rather strange report about senior citizens, all men, btw, who were arrested for, are you ready?
Police caught them masturbating in a public park.
Really? At age 70, 71 and 84, you’d think they must’ve had some inkling the park wasn’t the ideal venue for self-gratification.

That’s it for today. I can’t top that. Talk to you next time.
