It’s another beautiful sunny day here in Panama City, Florida.
Since a rainy Saturday, it’s been in the mid to late 70’s.
For middle January, I’ll take it and ask for more of the same next year…’
My teeth problems are much better, thank you.
Went to the endodontist and after x-rays and some tests, he pronounced me not in need of his services.
The work my regular dentists had done was more extensive, and required more healing time, than I’d anticipated. The endodontist suggested that taking an anti-inflammatory twice daily, for anther two weeks should do me up.
Good news, indeed.
Still have some pain and soreness, but it’s more tolerable, even for a big baby like me…
Hope you’re also doing fine and are enjoying yourself, too.
For years, Treasa and I have tried to reserve Wednesdays as ‘date days’ and date nights. And, as luck would have it, yesterday was Wednesday, practically all day.
On our ‘days’ we like to attend local events, or explore nearby towns and public attractions…
Sorta act like tourists, I guess.
Nothing of interest was happening yesterday and I wasn’t feeling the ‘tourist’ vibe, anyway.
So I suggested we hit some of the local thrift stores, and Treasa, in a rare moment of inattention, accepted.
In Bay County, Florida, with a population of little over 177 thousand souls, and to my knowledge, we have 5 Goodwill stores, 2 Salvation Army stores, a Catholic Charity store, a Habitat For Humanity thrift store and at least one Humane Society thrift store.
And, in a book buying mood, I’ve been known to hit each one in a day.
I’ve spent hundreds of dollars on books at these stores. (Hardly any since my Kindle came into my reading life)
The two desks in my office came from local thrift stores. One of the desks is a really cool period piece, that even Treasa admires.
Early on, I pieced together a complete computer system from parts bought at local thrift stores. Still using the speakers I got for that particular system.
Also have a green, perfect fit, and, at the time, a new London Fog rain jacket that I bought for something like 15 bucks at a Goodwill shop.
Seems I’ve a talent for bargain hunting.
Which is surprising. Until about 7 years ago, I’d never been inside one of these kinda establishments.
But, as there’re so many of them around here, one day I just stopped in one, out of pure boredom, more than anything.
Right away I was knocked over by the price, and selection, of the books. And, for a while the book sections were the only area I browsed.
Eventually, though, and being my Daddy’s oldest son, I soon enough started smelling the heady aroma of ‘bargains’ awaiting to be discovered and taken advantage of.
Well, before you could say, “somebody please stop this man”, my thrift store shopping legend began.
I’m not kidding. I can find a deal.
I only buy quality stuff, and I’m not afraid of clothing and footwear, either. But, they must show little wear, if not new.
For example, I’ve several pairs of Sperry topsiders that retail in the 80 and 90 dollar range, that I got for ten bucks or so.
Got a really nice pair of Bass lace-ups for $7.99 yesterday, when Treasa was with me. They showed absolutely no wear and were my exact size. (Always an important consideration.)
Bass is a very popular shoe brand in the South, and I’ve loved them since high school. And, this pair of shoes retailed for about 100 bucks.
Of course, I didn’t need the shoes.
Sooner or later, I’ll clean out my closets, and take a whole buncha of my ‘bargains’ back to either the Salvation Army, or the Catholic Charity, store.
Yeah, I know, I know…
But, I can afford it.
And, I’m just having a little harmless fun. As Treasa and I did yesterday on our ‘date day’.
Well, it was fun until the 2nd store, and Treasa started paying attention to what I was putting her through.
That woman! I barely got the 3rd store outta my system 😉
Bottom line though, there are bargains to be had at these stores. And, the money we spend in them does help others in their time of need.
It’s a good deal for everyone involved. Plus, good karma for us.
Ideas for me, your aging related story, or comments are very welcome…
