It’s another beautiful day here in Panama City, Florida.
It’s partly cloudy, which means more sun than clouds, with temperatures in the late 70’s. But, I’ll take it.
Sure hope you’re feeling well and having some fun.
It’s time for another edition of our weekly favorite Aging News.
And, we’ll begin with…
Are Herbal Products Safe For Senior Citizens:
After my way less than satisfying ordeal last year, with a MD, who was also a trained naturopath, I’m leery of taking any nutritional supplement before first getting extensive blood testing done.
Looks like I’m not the only one who thinks this way…
These products may not be safe if you have cancer, an enlarged prostate gland, high blood pressure, diabetes, glaucoma, heart disease, epilepsy, Parkinson disease, psychiatric issues, or problems with clotting blood, your immune system, liver or thyroid…”
This according to Fred Cicetti, AKA, The Healthy Geezer.
Because manufacturers aren’t required by law to list all ingredients included in their nutritional products, you’re never sure what’s in them and just how they could effect your health.
Plus, herbal, or nutritional supplements, have a history of interfering with many medications prescribed for aging patients.
All in all, it’s probably best to tread lightly when it comes to herbal products.

Staying Active Is The Key To Healthy Aging:
I realize you regularly hear variations of this theme from me. For that I make no apologies. It’s crucial that we don’t set down and stiffen up.
Want some proof?
In 2008, as many as 5.3 million deaths around the world were caused by physical inactivity, according a 2012 study published in The Lancet, a medical journal…
The above quote is from an interesting article by Carla Grygiel, the executive director of the Newark Senior Center.
Because her daily job focuses on the betterment of the senior citizens in her care, she’s in a position to know of what she’s talking about.

Are Your Aging Parents In Financial Trouble:
Recently, the Center for Retirement Research at Boston University, released a study called The Causes and Consequences of Financial Fraud Among Older Americans.
The researchers identified some key signs that older people may be unfit to make their own financial decisions.
Among those were:
- slow to complete financial tasks
- key parts of financial papers missing
- having problems with everyday math
- problems understanding financial concepts
If you recognize any of these signs, it’s may already be too late to prevent some damage that was done because of poor asset management decisions.
Yet, intervention could save the ‘farm’, so to speak.
The takeaway, have that ‘heart-to-heart’ financial talk before any signs of declining mental abilities.
Which isn’t an easy conversation to instigate.

Financial Crimes Against Senior Citizens Are Soaring:
As if sagging butts and turkey necks weren’t burdens enough to carry around, we’ve gotta be ever wary of scammers trying to separate us from our money.
Most of these scams are based upon one of three gambits:
- we owe money
- we’ve won money, or are owed money
- someone we love needs fast money to get outta a jam
Variations on these basic schemes are almost endless.

Three Senior Citizens ‘Hold-Up’ Purse Snatcher:
I thought this was a fitting follow-up to the above two news items…
It was in a Chinese restaurant parking lot, on Christmas day, in Winter Haven, Florida. Three senior citizens saw a 45 year-old man grab onto a 68 year-old woman’s purse.
Before the thief could hot-foot away, the three grabbed him, and held him down, until police officers showed up and arrested the golf ball.
